LIGONIER — D. 'Fern' Deskins, 81, of Ligonier began her new journey on Sunday, June 15, 2014, at 10:10 a.m. at her residence in Ligonier with her family at her side. Mrs. Deskins had been in failing health since March of 2013.

Fern was born on May 18, 1933, in Welch, West Virginia, to the late Jesse and Mytrle Estep. She graduated from Big Creek High School, War, West Virginia, in the class of 1950. In December of 1952, in McDowell County, West Virginia, she married the love of her life, James E. Deskins. He survives in Ligonier.
Fern and her husband have lived in Ligonier since 1970 coming from West Virginia. She was employed by Silgan Plastics in Ligonier, retiring in 1998 after 28 years of dedicated service. She loved cooking, gardening, attending church services at the Shiloh Baptist Church in Ligonier. She also enjoyed socializing with friends and family, garage sales and anything to do with her family.
She is survived by her husband,Jim; 2 sons, Arnold Deskins and Robert Deskins, both of Ligonier; 1 daughter, Deb Myers of rural Cromwell; 6 grandchildren, Mike Deskins, Steve Deskins, Anthony Deskins, Andrea Deskins, Amy Randoll and Kelli Mc Clanahan; 6 great-grandchildren, Cainan, McKenzie, Kate, Evan, Lily, Hailey and Brad; 4 sisters, Patsy, Becky, Gayle and Connie; and a close family friend, Flem Messer.
She is preceeded in death by 1 daughter, Sharlaetter McClanahan in 2006; 1 son, Jerry Deskins in 2013; and several siblings.
Funeral services will be on Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at 1 p.m. at the Shiloh Baptist Church in Ligonier, 709 Johnson Street, Ligonier. The Rev. Jimmy Shepherd and the Rev. Clerance Combs will officate.
Pallbearers will be Mike Deskins, Steve Deskins, Anthony Deskins, Brad Deskins, Kelli McClanahan, Andrea Deskins and Flem Messer.
Burial will follow at the Oak Park Cemetery in Ligonier.
Visitation will also be on Wednesday at the church from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
