LEO — Annella M. Smith, 99, of Leo, and formerly of Wolcottville, died Saturday, April 26, 2014, six days before her 100th birthday at The Cedars in Leo.
Mrs. Smith was born on May 2, 1914 in Monroe to James E. and Leona (Essex) Spuller.
She spent her childhood on her parent's farm in Allen County and graduated from Ossian High School in 1932. For four years, she worked as a nanny for the Walter Neumann family in Fort Wayne. While vacationing with the Neumann family at their farm in Wolcottville, she met her future husband Carl Smith. They married on June 7, 1937 in Winchester. They lived in Fort Wayne for four years before moving back to Carl's childhood farm in Woodruff. She was a homemaker on the farm and was the egg lady to many in LaGrange until 1958 when she started working at Sealed Power in LaGrange. She worked there until her retirement in 1979. She enjoyed sewing and walking to the friends' homes after retirement. She was a member since 1952 of Woodruff Grove United Methodist Church in rural Wolcottville and the United Methodist Women of the Church, Sylvan Chapter 251 O.E.S. of LaGrange since 1944 and was a former member of the Johnson Township Homemakers Club, Community Club of Wolcottville, and the Wolcottville American Legion Auxiliary.
Surviving is a son a daughter-in-law, Bob and Pam Smith of Churubusco; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Paul Spuller and John Spuller, both of Fort Wayne.
Preceding her in death was her husband, Carl F. Smith on February 8, 1972, her parents, James and Leona Spuller, a daughter, Carol Householder on October 15, 2010, a son, Jerry Lee Smith on September 6, 2006 a sister, Faye Smith in 2012, and a brother, Richard Spuller in 1925.
A celebration of her life will be held on her 100th birthday, Friday, May 2, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Woodruff Grove United Methodist Church, 4860 S 450 E, Wolcottville, with Rev. David Matthews and Rev. Carldean Merrifield officiating.
Visitation will take place on Friday from 10 a.m. until the service time at Woodruff Grove United Methodist Church. An Eastern Star service will begin the funeral service and will be conducted by the Sylvan Chapter 251 O.E.S.
Burial will immediately follow the funeral services at Woodruff Cemetery in rural Wolcottville.
Memorials may be made to Woodruff Grove United Methodist Church.
