STURGIS, Mich. — Richard Norman Kraft age 83 of Sturgis, Michigan passed away Friday afternoon, July 18, 2014 at his home.
He was born March 8, 1931 in Sturgis son of the late Richard and Viola (Kraft) Kraft.
Norm was a lifelong Sturgis resident and a graduate of Sturgis High School with the class of 1948.
He was first married to Violet Kline for five years. In 1959 he married Mary Ann Asbury in White Pigeon, Michigan. The couple were married for 27 years and blessed with twins Kent and Kendra. For the past 15 years he truly enjoyed time spent with his soul mate: Edith Frye.
Norm's working life began at Universal Diesel and he was employed by Formed Tubes in Sturgis for many years until the closure of the company. He also worked at Abbot Laboratories and for several years was the grounds keeper for Burr Oak Tool & Gauge.
Norm was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving for four years during the Korean War aboard a destroyer support vessel stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Many will remember him for his over 50 years of involvement as an athletic official umpiring baseball, softball and volleyball. Norm was a stellar athlete, playing semi-pro baseball for G&A Truck Lines for 10 years and Tri-State Litho Arts traveling fast pitch team for several years. He enjoyed hunting, trapping and fishing on Williams Lake and he was a gifted gardener each year planting from 200 - 300 tomato plants. He and Edith sold tomatoes and other produce he raised at his fruit and vegetable stand at the roadside in front of his home.
He loved playing euchre. He and Edith played at least three times a week. His exceptional ability to provide for his family was truly appreciated by his children.
He is survived by his twins: Kent Kraft of Sturgis and Kendra (Dr. Jeffrey) Dash of Florida; two grandsons: Brandon and Sean Dash; one brother: Larry (Debi) Kraft of Sturgis; his soul mate: Edith Frye of Sturgis and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two infant sisters: Lois Jean and Colleen Kraft.
The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 P.M. Wednesday at the Rosenberg Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 807 E. Chicago Rd., Sturgis, MI 49091, 269-651-3284. Funeral services celebrating the life of Norman Kraft will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis. The Rev. Calvin Kolzow will officiate. A luncheon will follow the service followed by a procession to Sherwood Cemetery for the committal and burial.
