Bill Simpson passed away on January 20, 2013 at the age of 91, in Ellensburg. He was born in Cle Elum on June 12, 1921 to John and Isabelle Simpson, the youngest of five children. Bill was born on 4th Street in Cle Elum and his three sisters and brother were born in Scotland. Bill attended school in Cle Elum and participated in many sports. Basketball being his favorite. In 1940 Cle Elum went to the All State high school tournament (held at Hec Ed Pavilion) where he was picked as an All-State Forward.
Forty six years later his grandson Jason DeVere (head basketball coach at Southridge High School) took his team to the AAAA basketball tournament at Hec Ed Pavilion. You know who was there rooting them on.
After he graduated, he married Carol Blume (Mar 21, 1943) and they were happily married for almost 70 years and lived in the same house for 64 years in South Cle Elum. Bill went to work at M.C. Miller Lumber Company until he was drafted into the Army. He served in the 10th Mountain Division in Italy as a radio operator in combat and received a Bronze Star. Returning to Cle Elum upon discharge, he went to work for NWI in the coal mines for 10 years until they closed. After that he worked on the Milwaukee RR as a trolley lineman until he retired. At one time Bill was the town marshal for South Cle Elum and belonged to the Volunteer Fire Dept. He was also a lifetime member of Post 1373 of the VFW and a golden 70 year member of the Cle Elum Eagles.
Bill attended many football and basketball games at Cle Elum high school over the years and use to go to the State "A" basketball tournaments in Tacoma (taking his grandson's and meeting up with old friends) up until the last couple of years. Bill loved to fish on the Yakima River, camp in the Salmon La Sac area, pick berries, take rides to 29 Pines and go to Reno with Carol.
Bill is survived by his loving wife Carol, of 69 years, their three children, Jim (Judy) Simpson of Cle Elum, Charlotte (Jim) DeVere of So. Cle Elum, Brad (Rhoda) Simpson of Ellensburg; six grandchildren Jeff & Jason DeVere, Chris & Ryan Simpson, Shannon & Chelsey Simpson, six great-grandchildren; brother Jack of Cle Elum and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters Sophia Jarderland, Jennie Blofeld and Izie Stumpf.
Bill was a big strong, handsome caring friendly man and loved his family dearly. HE WILL BE TRULY MISSED.
