Peggy Ellen Minor Hunt
Peggy Ellen Minor Hunt, 86, passed peacefully on Sunday, May 25, 2014 in Eagle, Idaho.
She was born Sunday, May 29, 1927, in the small town of Thoeny, Montana, to Floyd Phillip Minor and Jean Gertrude Hentz Minor. She moved to the Kittitas Valley in 1931 with her parents and older brother Floyd A "Buck" Minor. Her younger sister Bette Jean was born in 1944 in Ellensburg.
At age 11 her Dad gave her a little cotton rope and she started learning rope tricks. In 1947 she bought a trick riding saddle from Monte Montana. She was then able to do both trick riding and roping on her horse, Pepper. She worked a number of rodeos throughout the Northwest and Canada.
Peggy attended Ellensburg Public Schools, graduating in 1945, and attended Central Washington State College for one year. She was employed as a secretary, and continued performing as a trick rider and roper. Peggy was a 1947 Ellensburg Rodeo Princess.
Peggy and Gerald Charles Hunt were married June 25, 1950. They raised four children: Wayne Charles Hunt, Kenneth Floyd Hunt, Sheri Lynn Hunt Wippel, and Kristine Ellen Hunt Olson.
In 1993, Peggy was selected as one of the Ellensburg Rodeo Grandmas, who appeared in a long-running advertising campaign for Washington Mutual Bank. She and the other Grandmas toured all over the country, representing cowgirls around the world. They were later inducted into the Cowgirl Hall of Fame, and promoted the Ellensburg Rodeo throughout their partnership. In 2007, Peggy, Buck, their sister Bette Jean, and the rest of the Minor family were inducted into the Ellensburg Rodeo Hall of Fame.
Peg was a member of the Rodeo Valley Riders Club, the Cattlewomen's Association and the Moose Lodge. She always took great pride in her ranching and cowgirl lifestyle. She enjoyed attending her children and grandchildren's activities and events. Being a Grandma and Great-Grandma were highlights of her life.
Peggy was preceded in death by her parents and brother. She is survived by her children: Wayne Hunt (Cindy), Ken Hunt (Debbie), Sheri Wippel (Bryan), and Kris Olson; grandchildren: Blaine Hunt (Tyra), Gerald Hunt, Mitch Engel (Emily), Aimee Lane, Travis Hunt, Chelsy Wippel Bittick (Jeff), Lacey Wippel, Haley Gleason Schmidlin (Eric), Jamey Olson; great-grandchildren: Tristan and Gunnar Bittick, Kaleb and Reece Lane, Harlyn Hunt, Jack Engel, and Paige Schmidlin; and her sister Bette Jean "BJ" Minor Reichert.
