Jacob P. Bakker, 69, of Wheatfield, passed away on March 24, 2014. He was born on Oct. 24, 1944, in Hammond, the son of Jacob and Trinja (Lolkema) Bakker, both deceased.
Jacob served his country proudly in the United States Army in the Vietnam Conflict from Dec. 1, 1966 through Nov. 29, 1968. He was a decorated veteran and was the recipient of the Vietnam Service Medal with Three Bronze Service Stars. On June 26, 1970, in Oak Lawn, Ill., Jacob married Magdalena Leistra. Together, they lived in Wheatfield for 37 years.
Jacob enjoyed the reunions of the 1st Infantry Division, known as "The Big Red One." He was a member of the Wheatfield American Legion. Jacob was a self employed Bricklayer with Tri-County Masonry. Jacob was a member of the Immanuel United Reformed Church in DeMotte.
Jacob was a cherished husband, father and grandfather and will be missed by all. He is survived by his loving wife; Magdalena, his children; Peter Jacob (Beth) Bakker of DeMotte, Andrew John (Shannon) Bakker of Wheatfield, and Tina Marie (John) Dyke of DeMotte; five grandchildren, Tyler and Katelyn Bakker, Abigail, Jacob and Emmelene Dyke; brothers, Albert (Alvina) Bakker of St. John, Theodore (Ora) Bakker of Phoenix, Ariz., and brother in law; Robert (Irene) Huizenga.
Jacob was preceded in death by one sister; Theresa Huizenga.
Friends may call on Thursday, March 27, from 2 to 8 p.m. at Jackson Funeral Service in DeMotte. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, March 28, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel United Reformed Church in DeMotte, with Reverend Wetselaar officiating. Interment will be in the Holland Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the DeMotte Christian School.
