Bernice Ballard, 71, of Holy Cross, died Friday, Aug. 17, 2012, at Spring View Hospital in Lebanon. She was born Feb. 9, 1941, in Holy Cross. She was a retired employee of the Marion County Board of Education. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rueben and Anna Belle Medley Smith; and three brothers, Juddie Smith, Louis Kendrick Smith and Earl Smith; and a sister, Wilbie Corbett. Survivors include her husband of 51 years, James Ballard; three sons, Scott (Ruth Ann) Ballard, John (Stephanie) Ballard, both of New Hope, and Neil (Lara) Ballard, of Mount Washington; a daughter, Karen (Donnie) Nalley, of Loretto, seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Barbara (Gerald) Ann Fogle, of Holy Cross and Ada Jane (Dee Dee) Hamilton, of Loretto, two brothers, Aaron Smith, of Richmond, Ind., and John Edgar (Grace) Smith, of Bardstown. Mass of Christian burial was 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 20, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Holy Cross, with interment in the church cemetery. The Rev. R. Joseph Hemmerle was the celebrant.
