Richard E. Whelan, 75, passed away peacefully at home early Saturday morning, July 12, with his wife of 53 years, Carol (Gohmann) and daughter, Laura Whitus (Tom) by his side.
He was Bardstown native and graduate of St. Joseph Preparatory. He was the retired president and former owner, along with his wife, of Torco Testing Services, Inc., a member of the Pyramid Trust and the former New Albany Country Club, where he was an avid golfer. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Albany, the Knights of Columbus, a Kentucky Colonel, a lifelong UK basketball fan and loved a game of UpWords with his family.
His was a life well lived and he leaves behind a great many quality people who will mourn his passing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Henry and Jessie (Stiles) Whelan.
Survivors include his brothers, William (Patricia), Joe (Ann), Patrick (Jayme) and Nick (Ela); along with several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 15, in the Kraft Spring Street Chapel with entombment to follow in Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park in New Albany.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
