Edwin J. Duckworth, 85, of Hudson, Ohio, formerly of Stow, passed away Friday morning Dec. 6, 2013, at Marymount Hospital.
Ed graduated from Kent State University where he held the track record for the One Mile in 1950. He was married 63 years to his loving wife Katie (Wathen), of Bardstown, Ky. He was an active and longtime member of Holy Family Parish. Ed was proud of his accomplishment of donating over 18 gallons of blood to the American Red Cross.
Ed was a life-long sailor. He grew up sailing on Turkeyfoot Lake with his father and brother. He was a member of South Shore Yacht Club and Berlin Yacht Club. Over his sailing career, he owned nine Thistle sailboats and competed yearly in the Thistle National Championships and the Midwinter Regatta in St. Petersburg, Florida from 1968. He was a past officer in the Thistle Class Association and received the Minton Award for service to the class.
He also raced internationally on a J-24 with his good friend Peter Milnes of Newport, RI. They raced in Bermuda and represented the United States at the J-24 World Championship in Monacco.
Ed is preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Harry B. and Blanche (Sigmier) Duckworth; his daughter Mary Barbara Duckworth; and his brother Warren Duckworth.
He is survived by his wife Katie; his children, John Duckworth, Kathy (Jack) Finefrock, Ginny (Andy) Barnes, Anne (Mark) Keyser, Mary Jeanne Duckworth, Mary Beth (Mike) Hall, Warren (Dianne) Duckworth, and Peggy (Mike) Goetz; his sister Ginny Burger, of Walnut Creek, Calif.; 16 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren including a little girl born on the day of Ed's passing.
Friends may call Sunday 4-8 p.m. at the Dunn-Quigley Funeral Home, 3333 Kent Rd (at Rt. 91) in Stow. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at noon on Monday at Holy Family Church, 3179 Kent Rd. in Stow. Burial will be at All Saints Cemetery in Northfield Center.
