Hazel was an avid bowler, taught kids to bowl, and traveled widely. She and another lady established a missionary church in the Philippines in the late 1950s, still going strong when last contacted in 2008. She loved everyone she met, and loved to see and feed the birds. She was a member of Wakefield Baptist Church, Post 288 American Legion, Bloomfield, and Post 1170, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Middletown.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Bertha (Brooks) Knauer; three brothers, Chester, Leslie and Bill; two sisters, Corine and Hazel's twin sister, Mabel.
Hazel is survived by her husband of 66 years, Cecil (Gene) Ferguson; a daughter, Marillyn, and her husband, Bobby Dean; a son, David and his wife, Kim Ferguson; four grandchildren, Wayne Dean, Dr. Terry and his wife, Tabitha Dean, Rhonda Dean, Mary and husband, Randy Brown; great grandchildren, Amber Brown and fiance, James Stewart and Morgan Dean; along with several nieces, nephews, and a host of friends worldwide.
The funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, at McFarland-Troutman-Proffitt Funeral Home with burial to follow in Highland Memory Gardens, veteran's section, to await her husband Gene, a World War II and Korean War Veteran. The Rev. Tom Sparrow will officiate.
