Joseph Philip "Phil" Mathews, 88, of Lexington, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2018, at St. Joseph Hospital (Hospice Unit) in Lexington with his wife Joann by his side. He was born in Bardstown, Aug. 14, 1929, to James Howard Mathews and Mary Ada (Dickerson) Mathews who preceded him in death. He was one of six children all of whom passed away before his demise.
Phil lived a full life after graduation from St. Joseph Prep of Bardstown in 1949. The life he led was full and rich, filled with family, travel, time spent outdoors and meaningful work at Jack Mann Scales of Lexington previously known as Toledo Scales.
Phil was a veteran of the Korean War receiving an honorable discharge from the military in 1952. He had many talents a few of which consisted of woodworking, gardening and to his friends and acquaintances he was known as (Mr. Fixit) a person when help was needed. Phil was interested in many things with history being close to his heart.
He was a faithful and loving husband to his wife of 41 years, Joann. He often stated to those around him "I do not deserve her and she is to me a Saint." Those who knew him loved him and will certainly miss him as Joann will.
Phil was very proud of his service to his country and to Bardstown where he grew up. He would often tell stories when with friends of his childhood there. His favorite pastime was spent in the garden, woodworking shop and fishing with Joann.
Phil will be greatly missed by his friends, nieces, nephews, and his loving wife, Joann who is faithfully looking forward to joining him in Heaven.
The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 10, at Milward-Southland with visitation at noon. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bluegrass Care Navigators.
