Mary Elizabeth Downs, 92, of Bardstown, died Thursday, July 26, 2012, at her residence. She was born March 31, 1920, in Nelson County, was a homemaker and a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Melvin Downs; a daughter, Geraldine Allender; her parents, Palmer and Lenora Walker Auberry; a sister, Thelma Wheeler; two brothers, William Auberry and Comas Auberry; and a granddaughter, Melissa Spalding. Survivors include her children: Joe Downs, of Louisville, Barbara Jean Metcalfe, Nora Ballard, Cathy Mattingly, David Downs, Jane Newton, Melvin Downs Jr., Helen Tucker, Sharon Downs, all of Bardstown, Becky Dewitt, of Frankfort, Theresa Tidwell, of Franklin, Tenn., Denise Downs, of Bardstown, Veronica Hill, of Springfield, Jeanie Ballard and Christine Mattingly, both of Bardstown; 47 grandchildren; 86 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Georgie Bradley, Eudora Mattingly, Elsie Smith, all of Bardstown and Helen Reid, of Louisville. Mass of Christian burial will be 1 p.m. Monday, July 30, at St. Thomas Catholic Church with burial in St. Thomas Cemetery. The Rev. Joseph Batcheldor will be the celebrant. Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Sunday at Clark and Houghlin Funeral Home and Cremation Services with a prayer service at 6 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the
