Donald Cornell, 81, formerly of Nelson County, died Friday, Nov. 8, 2013.
The Guest Book is expired.
He was a husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, neighbor, friend, Catholic, and the hardest working man that ever was. He was born in Mount Washington, Kentucky to J.W.F. and Mildred Cornell. He later moved as young boy with his family to their beloved farm on Bloomfield Road just outside of Bardstown. After graduating from high school, he joined the Air Force, spending 20 years as an aircraft crew chief. After retiring, he moved to Carmichael, Calif., and became a self-taught craftsman. He spent 18 years as the maintenance supervisor at Crosswoods Homeowners Association. He was a devout Catholic who converted to the faith in 1989 at age 56. He was often affectionately called "Pops." To anyone who needed help, he willingly lent a hand. He was honest, tough, empathetic, and always finished what he started.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth, of 56 years; his children, Jennifer Vandenberg, Greg, Matthew, and Mark Cornell, and their spouses; his grandchildren, Steven, Christopher, Andrew, Gregory, Nicholas, Luke, Jonah, and Charlie Cornell; his siblings, Dolores Oakley, Dwight Cornell, Charlotte Wheeler, Sarah Mae Riney, and David Cornell.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, followed by a rosary, at Lind Brothers. 4221 Manzanita Ave. in Carmichael. A Requiem Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 15, at St. Michael Catholic Church, 4524 Garfield Ave., Carmichael, CA 95608. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Sacramento, Calif. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to St. Michael School at St. Michael Catholic Church.
