Born January 30, 1926, in Eugene, Oregon, Jess Hayden, Jr., beloved and dedicated husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, was surrounded by his loving family when he passed away in Loma Linda, California, on October 19, 2012. He graduated from Woodburn High School in Woodburn, Oregon, in 1943. Jess was a family man and academic giant. He was a colleague and professional partner of Niels Bjorn Jörgensen, DDS. Together they co-authored the Loma Linda Technique of Dental Pain Control; a major contribution to world dentistry. He also was a Captain in the United States Navy, both active and reserves, for more than 41 years. He served both in the Korean War and the first Persian Gulf War. He enjoyed reading, mountaineering, and snow skiing. He was a private, modest, and humble man, who kept his accomplishments to himself.
Jess graduated with a DMD degree from the University of Oregon in 1947, an MS degree in Pedodontics from the University of Michigan in 1955, and a PhD degree in anatomy from Loma Linda University in 1962. In addition to private dental practices in Eugene, Oregon, and Denver, Colorado, he was a research fellow in dental anesthesia at the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles in 1974, and a senior Clinical Fellow at the University of Colorado Medical Center in 1978. He held academic appointments with the United States Navy, VI Fleet; University of Michigan; Royal Dental College, Aarhus, Denmark; the University of Iowa; and Loma Linda University Schools of Medicine and Dentistry, where he taught anatomy.
Among Jess' many professional accomplishments, he was a consultant to the Council on Dental Education of the American Dental Association for dental school accreditation, a member of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, and consultant to the U.S. Naval Hospital in Camp Pendleton, California. He was a co-principal investigator with the National Institutes of Health, and a member of many professional organizations.
Jess is survived by his wife Anita; his three sons; Roderick, Gregory, and Joel; his daughter, Janie MacArthur; two brothers; Stephen and Cedric; Anita's children; Jill Campbell, Janell Ehrler, and Steve Campbell; eleven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Jess' family describes him as: modest, wise, affectionate, loving, accomplished, chivalrous, honorable, and "very witty." They are all looking forward to seeing him again in the Earth-made new.

Dr. Hayden was my first dentist on Brookside Ave. This was many years ago, but I remember being so scared like most children. He was a very kind and gentle man and made my dental visits so easy. There needs to be more people like him in this world. My prayers are with you. Sincerely, Terry Elgin McDonald
