Barbara Marcella Martinez, a long time
resident of Pasadena, passed away peacefully on October 21, 2012 after a short battle with lung cancer. Born at St Luke's Hospital in Pasadena, on May 2, 1953, to Arthur and Ida Martinez, she brought joy and happiness to her family. She will be remembered by many as a woman who overcame many challenges from epilepsy due to meningitis at age 7.
Barbara was a friend to many, and was always willing to introduce herself to others, or throw a joke into the conversation. Due to her epilepsy, she was unable to drive a car, but she loved the transit system as it gave her the independence she sought. She also had the opportunity to be friend many of our Pasadena bus drivers who were like angels that watched over her.
Barbara was known for her willingness to help feed the homeless on Thanksgiving, assist with meals at the Senior Center and participate in numerous fundraisers for the Epilepsy Foundation. She was a member of the Santa Anita Catholic Singles Club and kept those friends for over 30 years. Barbara earned an AA degree from Pasadena City College, worked at the Broadway Dept Stores for 14 years and at Cal Tech for the last 17.
Barbara is preceded in death by her sister, Betty Luce, her mom, Ida Martinez, and father, Art Martinez. She is survived by her siblings Roberta V. Trujillo, Virginia Byrtus (Ken), Annamaria Galbraith-Stewart (Jim), Arthur Martinez PhD, and Antoinette Martinez MD; her aunts, Josie Sanchez, Carmen Lopez, Juanita Vitali, and Uncles Gilbert Lopez and Tony Leanos. She is also survived by 21 nieces and nephews, more than 34 Grand-nieces and nephews, and 4 Great-Grand nieces and nephews.
Memorial Services Michael Landon Community Center November 11th at 2:00pm, Rosary will be led by the Santa Anita Catholic Singles Club on November 4th.
