Isabel Macchiarella


Isabel Macchiarella, lovingly known as "Poggy", died on Wednesday January 29, 2014 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

She was born in Fort Meyers, Florida on October 19, 1922. She was one of four children born to Benhill Sr. and Versalee Strickland. The family moved to Bainbridge, Georgia in 1929. She married Angelo
Macchiarella and moved to New York, where their daughters were born. In 1950 they moved to California and in 1951, their son was born. She spent the next 60 years in the San Fernando Valley and was an active member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and various Womens' Guilds.

Her husband died of cancer in 1995. Isabel was soon diagnosed with cancer. She had aggressive treatment and was in remission from 1998 until 2013. She moved to Simi Valley, CA in 2010 to be near family. She was once again diagnosed with cancer and never fully recovered from her surgery in September of 2013.

She is survived by her children, Michael Macchiarella, Carol Costello, Sheila Pearce and Sharon Macchiarella; sister, Sara Sasser of Bainbridge, Georgia; and sister-in-law, Katherine Dispenza. She was blessed with numerous grand, great grand and great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was deeply loved and will be sadly missed.

The family will hold a Rosary at 7:00 PM on February 4th at Rose Family Funeral Home located at 4444 Cochran St., Simi Valley, CA 93063. A Mass will be held on Wednesday February 5th at 10:30 AM at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church located at 18400 Kinzie St., Northridge, CA 91395, followed by interment at San Fernando Mission Catholic Cemetery located at 11160 Stranwood Ave., Mission Hills, CA 91345.
