MARY ANN CHILDS

Died the evening of November 23, 2012, at home with her daughter. Born September 13, 1924 in Hallettsville, Texas, Mary Effie Carpenter lived a long and rich life. She completed high school at 17 and began teaching in the one room schoolhouse. She graduated Incarnate Word College with her BSN in 1947 and married C. Russell Childs on February 14, 1952. They had their only child Erin in 1958. She first worked as a surgical nurse and later became a school nurse serving multiple schools in the San Fernando Valley. A car accident in 1971 ended that career and she spent many years recovering. In the late 80s she became a hospital chaplain serving at both St. Vincent's and St. Francis Medical Centers combined for over a decade and retired in 2000. She was widowed in 1991. Mary Ann remained devoted to God and the Virgin Mary her entire life. She never met someone who wasn't a friend and was known for her kindness and thoughtfulness. She has been an example and inspiration to many.

She is survived by her daughter, Erin; brother, Ed; 17 nieces and nephews and she lives in the memory of countless others.

Burial is at 10:00 a.m., November 29th, at San Fernando Mission Cemetery. Funeral services will follow at noon at St. Matthews Lutheran Church, North Hollywood. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Alzheimer's foundation or Incarnate Word College, School of Nursing in her memory.
