William Ginsburg Obituary

WILLIAM H. GINSBURG

Renowned attorney, loving husband, father, loyal son, brother and friend, passed on April 1, 2013 at his home in Los Angeles following a valiant struggle against cancer. He was 70 years old.

Bill leaves his wife Laura, three children, two grandchildren, mother and brother.

He was involved in the seminal "right-to-die" cases in California, the Hank Gathers basketball court death case, and the dispute over Liberace's remains. Before transitioning into the medical malpractice field, Bill specialized in pool safety, including the landmark Meneeley v. National Spa & Pool Institute case over diving injuries in sub-standard swimming pools.

Bill was a Diplomate of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA) and served as a member of the LA Chapter Executive Committee. He was a national board member and President and Trustee of the ABOTA Foundation, which provides education concerning the history and value of the right to trial by jury.

Bill served the legal community for over 45 years; he tried more than 300 cases in 21 states and participated in more than 350 mediations/arbitrations.

I worked for Bill for almost five years in the early 1990's. He was one of the most respectful and hard-working men that I ever had the pleasure of working for in this world. Probably my favorite job to date. He was as respectful to the janitor as he was to one of his partners. We could use more people with that kind of attitude in the world today. He taught me a great deal about people, work and life in general. I will miss his kind, amusing and other contributions to the world. My condolences to his family and friends.

Bill was always generous with his time and extensive medical malpracice expertise. Several years we had him as a guest lecturer at the Society of Orange County Emergency Physicains' Annual Scientific Symposia. He received the highest evaluations and was not only knowledgeable but witty. He refused to accept our honorarium and donated it back to our meager treasury saying "we needed it more than he". Bill was a valued friend and respected fellow professional. He will be missed.

Dear Laura and family,
I know I am only one of many whose life was profoundly touched by Bill. The best times were when we tried cases together, where he helped me learn the practice of law, taught me that practicing law can actually be fun, and taught me how to be poised in the court room. By example he taught me the value of friendship and the importance of family. He was a wonderful mentor and an even better friend. I am so grateful for all of the memories I have of him, you and your family. With much love, Myrn.

To the Ginsberg family,

I wanted to offer my condolences.

Imagine; life when
when eyes of blind ones see again,
And ears of deaf ones hear again,
When deserts blossom as the rose
And from parched ground fresh water flows,
When lame ones leap just like the hart,
When loved ones never have to part,
Such blessed times you'll realize,
If you keep your eyes on the prize.

When tongues of mute ones speak again,
When old ones will be young again,
When earth will yield her rich increase
And all good things will never cease,
When songs of children fill the air,
When joy and peace are everywhere,
Then, too, you'll see the dead arise,
If you keep your eyes on the prize.

When wolves and lambs will feed as one,
When bears and calves bask in the sun,
A mere young boy will lead them all,
And they will head his childish call.
When tears belong to yesterday,
When fears and pain have passed away,
You'll see how God these things supplies,
If you keep your eyes on the prize.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

My memories of Bill go back over fifty years, to our days together at Cal. The fondest is of the warm and welcoming way he treated me, a new and apprehensive member of the ZBT house, in 1961. Bill was a mensch.

My deepest condolences to Laura and the Ginsburg family. Bill was a very gracious mentor to me during my time in LA in the '90s, always willing to share what he knew, not only about the law and trying cases, but about life. He was a great champion of many causes, big and little. What a great guy. He will always be a factor in my life and an influence on how I conduct myself, and he will be sorely missed. Rest in peace, my good friend.

Bill and I go back to Berkeley days and there are memories galore, updated over the years - most recently when he was in DC for Monica case. We had dinner when suddenly he put his hand over mine and said, "Justy, you look just like your father." It was an amazing and powerful moment I'll never forget. Goodbye Bill

I knew Bill since 1977 when he hired me as his law clerk, then his associate, then his partner. There was a lot to say about Bill, but through it all, perhaps the most important point is that he was actually a nice man. And that is what I said about him 30 years ago. He lived, in his own mind, an entire second life (he was afraid he would die young, as his father had) and I remember the joy he experienced with his wife, his children and his life.
