ALAN ROBERT BERRY

Died: March 17, 2013 - Calabasas, CA

Alan was the son of Virgil E. Berry and Edith Grindle Berry. Alan was born in Walla Walla, WA. He attended Walla Walla High School (known at WAHI) and Whitman College. He lettered at football, baseball and basketball, but also participated in the Glee Club and the A Cappella Choir. Alan was known both for his sports prowess and his beautiful tenor voice. He graduated from Whitman College with a BA in Public Administration and Mathematics.

June 1944, Alan enlisted in the Navy. Although not yet 18, Alan went to the Great Lakes Naval Station for training in communications. Alan served in the amphibious forces in the South Pacific, in Okinawa, and was part of the occupation force in Japan. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in June 1946.Alan in later years joined the Naval Reserve and rose to officer rank. He retired as a Commander in 1979.

He married Betty Davenport on September 3, 1949. They had three children: Carol, Sue and Bob. The Berry Family moved to Woodland Hills in 1971, and lived in their house on Gainford Street for 42 years.

Alan had a long career filled with many jobs due to his computer and data communications expertise. They included: Pacific Telephone, Weyerhaeuser, WTCI(later MCI), Cantor Fitzgerald, Flying Tigers, Continental Airlines, AT&T, Blue Cross, UCLA, TRW, and the County of Los Angeles. In addition to his other activities, Alan pursued a Master's Degree and received an MBA from Pepperdine University in 1980. In retirement, Alan and Betty started "Cruising". They travelled to every continent and met many wonderful people.

A Celebration of Life service will be held for him at, Woodland Hills Presbyterian Church, 5751 Platt Ave. on April 6th at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, the Family is suggesting a donation in Alan's name to the: Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.

Alan was a good friend, a good neighbor, a good father and a good man. He always tried and worked hard, did the right thing, was always there for his family! He leaves behind his beloved wife, Betty; daughters, Carol (Mark Brooks) Berry and Sue Sander; son, Bob (Margo Berger) Berry; grandchildren, Braedon and Chynna Berry, and Katie and Tori Sander; his beloved Eteri, his little Juliet; and his cat, Harold. He will be missed every minute of every day!
