69, passed away January 2nd at his home in Ontario. He was diagnosed in September 2012 with an aggressive brain tumor. His sister, two daughters, & former wife were with him at the time of his passing.
As a young child, Marv fell from a tree at his home in Yucaipa, a branch catching his right arm & tearing it completely from his body. His parents demanded that the surgeon reattach their son's arm, despite the surgeon's insistance that the arm, & perhaps Marvin, would not survive. This same boy, his arm reattached, lived to graduate from Pomona High School in 1962, where he played football & baseball, & was scouted by several major league teams. He was offered a chance to play with the Los Angeles Dodgers, but chose instead to serve his country in the United States Navy, where he survived the sinking of two of his ships. After an honorable discharge from the Navy, Marv attended college at Mt. SAC, where he played college football before joining the Pomona Police Department. Marvin began training with the department's powerlifting team, where he competed professionally, setting & then breaking numerous Powerlifting World Records.
Marvin leaves behind two daughters, Courtney Marsh & Cydney Phillips, three grandchildren, his sister, Geraldine Wolford, a brother, Charles "Sonny" Phillips, & youngest sister, Christine Erixson.
Marvin was respected & loved by friends and colleagues in the law enforcement & powerlifting communities. He will be greatly missed by all who love him.
A memorial gathering will be held at the Pomona Eagles on Saturday January 19 at 12pm.
