Funeral services for Mary C. (Betty) Wagner, 84, of Portales will be at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, May 22, 2013 in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Rev. David Swann officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Cypress, CA. The family will receive guests at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 PM. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you give to Mt. Hermon Christian Camps, 37 Conference Drive, Mt. Hermon, CA 95041, or to Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, 1 Billy Graham Parkway, Charlotte, NC 28201-0001 Mary C. Wagner, known to most people as Betty, passed away May 17, 2013 at Heartland Continuing Care, in Portales, NM .She was born May 19, 1928 in Pasadena, CA. to Eugene and Allie Mae Collins. Betty was a lovely young woman who was asked to sing solo's in her teens because of her beautiful voice. She went on from High School, to Pasadena City College, for her associate's degree for voice and early childhood education. Then to Whittier College for her bachelor's and finally a master's degree in education. She met Robert H. Wagner in 1946 in Catalina, where she was singing in a wedding. They were married on July 15, 1950 in Las Vegas, NV. Mrs. Wagner taught for the Long Beach Unified school district from 1953 until her retirement in 1986. She worked hard for her career, and balanced work and family very eloquently. She was the head of the PTA and she loved children and teaching them. For years they would come back to see her and to "Thank" her for being such a wonderful teacher. Betty was also a wonderful role model as a wife, mother and grandmother. She was always doing the right thing for everybody. She was a Christian woman, teaching her children at a young age about the Lord and was a praying mother. She had a beautiful spirit, always a smile on her face, and loved the Lord! She was an active member of Lakewood First Baptist in Lakewood, CA. Betty sang in the choir, and sang numerous solos for various programs and weddings. Mrs. Wagner moved to Portales in 2001, and was a member of First Baptist Church in Portales, NM. She is survived by her children, Nancy Douma, and her husband, Phil of Portales, NM., Jim Wagner and his wife, Loretta of Portales, NM., her six grandchildren, Aaron Douma and his wife, Amber, of Portales, Adam Douma of Ft. Worth, TX, Lauren Douma of Lubbock, TX, Kyle Wagner of Lubbock, TX, Jenna Wagner of Lubbock, TX, Kristen Wagner of Portales, NM and her great granddaughter Aubri Douma of Portales, NM. Mrs. Wagner was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, and by her husband, Robert H. Wagner. Wheeler Mortuary of Portales
