May 20, 1919-Dec. 23, 2012
Born in Union City, N.J.; died peacefully in her sleep with her family at her side.
Mary was one of 12 children born to
Matthew and Christina Oleske. Her life was filled with love, laughter and music, which she spread to all she met throughout her life with her sunny smile, sense of humor-and a song whenever the mood struck.
During the War, Mary and her sister, Dorothy, worked as stenographers at Sperry Gyroscope in NYC where they attended the opera, ballet, plays and museums at every chance, and auditioned to be Radio City Music Hall Rockettes.
In 1960, Mary moved to Pasadena, enrolling in the first class of PCC's R.N. program for women over 40. She worked at Huntington Hospital, St. Luke and Las Encinas, where she cared for her patients with exceptional compassion and understanding.
Mary was determined to return to NYC, and at age 80, she did. She spent 6 years enjoying the city again, and being with family, at one point, leading over 100 of them in the Macarena at a wedding. She returned to Pasadena in 2006.
Mary is predeceased by her husband, Rudolph Steyrer, brothers Vincent, Joseph, Andrew, Louis, Matthew and William, and sisters, Gertrude, Anna and Henrietta. She leaves behind her loving daughter Elaine Fleming (Ledyard), beloved granddaughter, Cybele, both of Pasadena, her loving sisters Dorothy (Kerr) and Theresa (Engler) and over 75 nieces, nephews and their families.
A monthly Mass will be said in the "Lady Chapel" at St. Patrick's Cathedral in NYC during 2013. There will be a family celebration of her life in New York City in the Spring.
