Robert Henry Walker
Passed away on January 28, 2013 in Redlands, California. He was born on June 24, 1923 in Cedarhurst, Long Island, New York, to Jane and Joseph Walker. He graduated from Woodmere High School in 1941. Robert enlisted in the US Navy in 1942. He spent three years in the service during World War II as an aviation cadet in the US Navy and in the Army Air Corps, and received his commission as a second lieutenant in May 1945. During this time he discovered his passion for flying that began in single-engine trainers and would end in multi-jet transports. On Christmas day in 1944 Robert married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Fessler, in Hewlett, New York. Robert graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1950 with a BS in engineering and returned to active duty with the Air Force for the next twenty years. He was in the first AF academic class in meteorology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1951. During his years in Air Weather Service he flew combat reconnaissance in Korea and long-range reconnaissance in Japan. He also served in Viet Nam. Robert was the Director of Academics as well as a jet flight instructor for Air Training Command's Pilot Instructor program at Randolph AFB, Texas. Major Walker was an active pilot for his entire military career and retired as a C-141 Starlifter aircraft commander with Norton AFB, California. Major Walker was a lifetime member of VFW Post 2270 in Enid, Oklahoma. Robert is survived by his wife of 68 years, Dorothy; three children, Robert Walker (LaOng) and Randi Walker of Redlands, and Sherry Glahn (Leo) of Bainbridge Island, Washington; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Memorial services will be held February 16th at 11:00 AM at Trinity Episcopal Church, 419 Fourth Street, Redlands.
