Takeshi Okumura, age 96, passed away peacefully of natural causes on Sunday, October 21, 2012 at Kindred Transitional Care in Walnut Creek, CA. Born in El Monte, CA, he joins his beloved wife, Ruth Koyoshi Okumura, who passed away in January, 2006. He is survived by his brother, Tomotsu Okumura, who resides in Kumamoto Ken, Japan; his four children Joyce Berry, Lake Tahoe, CA; Cary Okumura, Auburn, CA; Irwin Okumura, Carlsbad, CA and Sandra Bohn, Clayton, CA; eight grandchildren Erin Tatlock, Brooke Berry, Robert and Kelly Okumura, Owen Cooper, Nicholas, Wesley and Marina Bohn; four great grandchildren Ivy, Alyxa, Levon and Emily Tatlock; three great great grandchildren Jayden Perkins, Aliyah and Pheona Tatlock. Takeshi "Tak" was a farmer in San Gabriel Valley (Southern CA) from 1930 - 1956, excluding WWII when he resided in Brighton, Colorado until the end of the war. Upon returning to CA, he resumed farming then he began a gardening business in La Puente which continued until his retirement in 1998. He was a Boy Scout Master in La Puente over 10 years and received a Community Service Award for his dedication. The last six years of his life were spent in alternate visits with his children who reside in Northern CA. Tak had achieved a third degree black belt in Judo, loved nature and especially enjoyed trout fishing with his wife. He was a great reader of history, current events and received his AA degree from Mt. San Antonio Jr. College in Walnut, CA. He was an advocate of good health and stayed physically active his whole life. A memorial service will be held Friday, Nov. 16, 2012 at 11 AM at the Nishi Hongwanji LA Buddhist Temple, 815 East First St., Los Angeles, CA 90012.
