Stephana Roth Ryan
Stephana Roth Ryan passed away June 13, 2012 in Long Beach, California. Daughter of Maj. Gilbert Joseph Roth USA-R and Lt. Gerda Young Roth, USN, RN, she was born in Santa Monica, California on June 4, 1946. She married Patrick Kevin Ryan in her hometown church in Redlands, California on August 29, 1970. Together they raised four daughters after moving to Long Beach in 1974. She was a career educator and taught English and Special Education at Santa Monica High School for 2 years, and Marina High School for more than thirty years. She also was a teaching assistant at UC Riverside, UC Irvine and Cal State Long Beach and received an Orange County Teacher of the Year Award in 2001. Although she retired from teaching in 2004, she continued to work on a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction at UC Riverside. Due to illness, she was unable to complete her dissertation and was awarded a Certificate of Completion of all requirements for the degree of Candidate in Philosophy in the field of Education in 2008. She fought brain cancer valiantly for almost 8 months and finally passed peacefully in her sleep. She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Patrick Ryan, and her four daughters Gail Raphael (Darren), Karen Beckman (David), Katie Ryan-Hoke (Clayton), and Annie Ybarra (David). She leaves behind nine grandchildren, Kira, Miranda, Carter, Madeleine, Hagen, Arran, Genevieve, Pierson and Hudson. Viewing and Rosary will take place on June 15, 2012 from 5:30-8:00 pm at All Souls Mortuary at 4400 Cherry Ave LB, CA 90807. Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2012 at 10:00 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church at 6220 E. Willow St LB, CA 90815, followed with a motorcade to internment at All Souls Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Brain Tumor Association at http://www.abta.org.
