Apr. 24, 1910-June 14, 2012
Passed away surrounded by his children on June 14 at his home in Montecito, California. Toby was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1910. He moved to Los Angeles with his father Roy Wilcox, his mother Frances Keeline Wilcox and his younger brother Richard in 1919. Toby attended the Deane School in Santa Barbara and Pomona College. Educated as a horticulturist he together with his brother Richard founded Keeline-Wilcox Nurseries in 1946. He married Virginia Holland (Biji") on April 22, 1933. Together they had four children, traveled the world, shared a passion for the sea and built numerous homes in Pasadena, Newport Peninsula, Lido Isle and Laguna Beach. Toby's love of plants took him all over the world looking for tropicals and unusual specimens. He continually brought back seeds and cuttings for testing. From a trip to Lord Howe Island off New Zealand he returned with seeds for the Kentia Palm, which would become a staple of Keeline-Wilcox Nursery. Toby's interest in horticulture never left him. Toby was a devoted father to his children, Dede, Denis, Stefan and Tessa. He was preceded in death by his wife of 75 years, Virginia H. Wilcox ("Biji"). His four children, 10 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren survive him. Services were held in Santa Barbara.
