Our loving mother and grandmother, Mary L. Vanderslice, passed away on September 30, 2012 at the age of 95. She was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on February 22, 1917 and was raised in Missoula, Montana. She graduated from the University of Montana with a degree in journalism and was on the basketball team. She was a member of the Alpha Phi Sorority. She came to California in 1943 to work for the forestry service as part of the war effort. It was there that she met and married Robert Vanderslice. They had five children before they divorced. Mary led an active life. She retired from the Compton Police Department records division in 1983. After her retirement, she spent many hours volunteering at her church in Lynwood. She later moved to Long Beach. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters for over fifty years. She loved to read. Much of her time after retirement was spent caring for her grandchildren who lived in Long Beach. She was an avid sports fan, following her favorite football team, Notre Dame. Her favorite athletes were her grandchildren, who will always be grateful for her encouragement and support of their activities. She was a wonderful, caring, and generous person who will be missed by those who knew her. She is survived by four children, Mary Kenyon (Stephen), Susan Marshall (James), Roberta Vanderslice, and Mark Vanderslice (Gaynell); 7 grandchildren, Jill Salinaz (Jason), Jeffrey Marshall (Alison Neuru), Kristen Marshall, Kimberly Marshall, Joseph Vanderslice, Mikel Vanderslice, and Kristina Vanderslice.
