Canoga Park/Somis, CA - Mario Giacopuzzi, 85, died peacefully on November 27, 2012 of respiratory failure. Mario was born on the family dairy farm in Canoga Park, California, to Antonio and Marie Giacopuzzi, immigrants from Northern Italy. The Giacopuzzi family was one of the founding families of Owensmouth, which would later become Canoga Park.
Mario graduated from Canoga Park High School in 1945, where he excelled in sports, especially football. He spent two years in the navy, stationed at Adak, Alaska as a fireman and was honorably discharged in 1948. Mario returned to Canoga Park to work on the family diary farm, Giacopuzzi Dairy. In 1951, Mario married Mary Ann Pekarovich and together they had four children. In the 1960's the dairy and family relocated to Vineyard Avenue in El Rio, California.
With Guido, his brother and business partner, Mario expanded the dairy herd to over 500 cows, and the business to six Cash & Carry stores located throughout Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Over the years the dairy farm received numerous awards from both the Los Angeles and Ventura County Fairs Boards for its quality production and award winning milk. The dairy herd was sold in 1983 and Mario retired.
Mario is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Ann, of Somis; and his children, Dr. Michael Giacopuzzi, DVM, (Cheryl) of Oxnard, CA, Cathi Giacopuzzi Berry (Robert) of Salinas, CA, Susan Giacopuzzi Ferro (Fred) of Somis, CA, and Dr. James Giacopuzzi, DVM, (Alden) of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Julia, Anthony (Tami), Vincent (Cheryl) and Giovanna Ferro, Gina (Paul) Herrera, Jesse (Joseph) Spedaliere, Nicholas Giacopuzzi, Gianna and Julian Giacopuzzi; and three great grandchildren, Anthony and Benito Herrera, and Jackson Spedaliere. He was preceded in death by his parents, Antonio and Marie; his sister, Malvina Manasero; and his brother, Guido Giacopuzzi. Mario will be greatly missed as the patriarch and advisor to both his and his extended family. He was a stern but generous and caring father.
