John Ledesma, a proud 55-year resident of Whittier, died on Thursday, March 14, in an Oceanside Hospital. John was surrounded by family when he peacefully passed.
John was born in Compton, Calif., on August 1, 1947 to Alvita "Vera" Payan of El Paso Texas and Amor "Al" Ledesma, also of Compton. He was the fifth of six children of the Ledesmas, themselves descendants of Mexican immigrants.
The family moved to Watts and eventually to Whittier, where John graduated from California High School. John was a proud Condor and often bragged of his exploits in football and cross country. While barely out of school, John met and married Cynthia Walker, an Air Force brat recently relocated to the area. John and Cyndi had two children, John Mack and Melissa Joy.
When the couple split, John dedicated his life to his children. He followed them to every sports event and school function they were ever part of-and there were a lot! His kids were his life, and that was just fine with him.
John was a diehard fan of the USC Trojans and was thrilled when his son played football at the university. He was equally proud of his daughter's graduation from college and her development into the fine young woman she is today.
John is survived by his kids, his sister Cora, grandchildren Alex Burwell, 25; Andrew Burwell, 13; Cynthia Burwell, 11; and Zack Ledesma, 6. He also leaves behind his daughter-in-law Denise Ledesma, son-in-law Wade Burwell, dozens of cousins and scores of devoted nieces and nephews.
Instead of cut flowers, the family would be happy to receive live plants or flowers that will be replanted in John's honor. Any deliveries should be made to: John Ledesma Memorial, 13716 Walnut Street, Whittier, CA 90602.
