The Rev. Robert 'Big Doug' Adkins, 77, of Caryville, died Dec. 24 at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville.
He was born on March 9, 1936, in Campbell County. He was a veteran of the United States Navy. Robert was a member of Red Ash Baptist Church. Robert pastored at Bearwallow Baptist Church and Red Ash Baptist Church over the years, and he also founded the Open Arms Ministry. He loved spending time with his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar and Flossie Packette Adkins; daughter, Patsy Brown and his brothers Willie and Raymond Adkins.
He is survived by his wife, Reba Adkins, of Caryville; son, Rick Adkins and wife, Rossana,Êof Pennsylvania; brothers, Willard Adkins, of Seymour, Doug Adkins,Êof Tennessee; sisters, Willadean Bell, of South Carolina, Carol Lawson,Êof Clinton; five grandchildren, one great-grandchild; several other nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and relatives.
Funeral services were Dec. 27 at Red Ash Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Braden, the Rev. Don Allen and the Rev. Kenny Gilliam officiating.
Interment was at Jacksboro Cemetery.
