Becky Lusk Lanius passed away peacefully at Hospice LaGrange on Thursday, April 24, from a rare disorder called FrontoTemporal Dementia. She was 61 years old and had lived in LaGrange for the past 29 years. Her family and friends are especially appreciative of the love and care she received from West Georgia Hospice in LaGrange during the final months of her life.
Mrs. Lanius was an elementary school teacher with a career that spanned 31 years, 24 of which were in Troup County where she taught at Mountville Elementary and Whitesville Road Elementary. She retired in 2008. She was much loved by her students and was especially fond of teaching kindergarten, but also taught first, third, and fourth grades during her career.
Mrs. Lanius was born in St. Louis, Mo. on September 12, 1952, but grew up in Baton Rouge, La. and earned her bachelor's degree from Louisiana State University in Elementary Education in 1973. It was while attending LSU that she met her future husband John Lanius who she married on August 17, 1974. They moved to Spartanburg, South Carolina in 1975 and lived there until 1985 when her husband was transferred by Milliken to LaGrange. During her career Mrs. Lanius earned two additional degrees including her Master's in Elementary Education and her Education Specialist's degree, both from Troy University. She was a devout Christian and for many years was a member of First Baptist Church on the Square.
She was a very talented artist and loved to paint and create numerous other arts and crafts which graced her home. She also sold many of her works. Her other passions included traveling and shopping. Her favorite travel destination was the Caribbean island of St. Maarten and she took over a dozen trips there with her family and friends. She also loved visiting Hawaii, Las Vegas, New York City and Orlando. Everyone that knew her marveled at the great pride she took in her dress and appearance. She was above all else an exceptional and caring mother to her two sons and a devoted and loving wife to her husband John.
Mrs. Lanius was preceded in death by her parents Marion Conway Lusk and Lillian Gomez Lusk, both of Baton Rouge. She is survived by her husband of 39 years John Lanius, her sons Jonathan Lanius (Courtney) of Atlanta and Matthew Lanius of Fernandina Beach, Fl.
