John Pearce "P.C." Cleaveland Jr.

Mr. J. Pearce "P.C." Cleaveland, Jr. (PawPaw), passed away May 13, 2014, at the age of 91 after a long illness.

Mr. Cleaveland was born in LaGrange and was the son of the late J. Pearce Cleaveland, Sr, of LaGrange and Carolyn Cook Cleaveland from Cooksville, NC. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Jane Brown Cleaveland of Wrens, GA and his stepmother, Anne A. Cleaveland of LaGrange, who died May 12, 2014. Mr. Cleaveland is survived by their three children; sons John P. Cleaveland, III, (Nancy) of LaGrange, GA, and their children Pearce IV and "Ginny"; Chris Cleaveland (Lesa) of LaGrange, GA, and their daughters Larkin and Jenna; and daughter Jane Carolyn Cleaveland Dwiggins (Fred) of Charlotte, NC, and their children Grady and Anna. He is also survived by his second wife, Essie M. Cleaveland, of LaGrange, GA, and her children Jeff Benefield (Bridget), Tim Benefield (Jenny), Vicki B. Roth (Doug) and Cindy Baker (Ray).

Mr. Cleaveland graduated from LaGrange High School and Emory University. He also attended Augusta Medical College and later joined the U.S. Army Medical Corps in 1944 and served the duration of World War II training U.S. Army combat medics. He joined the Cleaveland-Dodd Company in 1950, where he worked until it closed in 1994, working with his partner and father, John P. Cleaveland, Sr. and son, Chris Cleaveland. Mr. Cleaveland served for many years as Treasurer of the First Methodist Church of LaGrange, and also served his community as President of the LaGrange Rotary Club, Chairman of the LaGrange Downtown Development Authority and the Chairman of the Board of the LaGrange Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Cleaveland played tennis at LaGrange High School, Emory University and on the LaGrange area tennis courts until age 80. He was known to many of his friends simply as "P.C.". He was a beloved father, husband and friend.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday, May 17, 2014 in the Chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary with Dr. Harold Lawrence officiating. A private burial will immediately follow the funeral service. The gathering of family and friends will be Friday evening from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
