Mr. Lewis L. Banks, Sr. of Columbus, GA, passed Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at the Columbus Hospice at the age of 91.
The son of the late Sylvester, Sr. and Pearlie Martin Banks, Mr. Banks was born in Valdosta, GA on July 28, 1922. An educator within the LaGrange City Schools and the Troup County School System, Mr. Banks obtained his BS Degree from Savannah State College, Masters Degree from Columbia University in New York, and Specialist Degrees from the University of Kentucky and Auburn University. He served as Principal of Eastside Primary School. He was a member of St. James CME Church in LaGrange, the Georgia Teachers Association, National Association of Educators, 100 Black Men of LaGrange and the Sons of LaGrange – Prince Hall Masons. He was also on the Board of Directors with the Troup County Housing Authority. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marian Katherine Winston Banks, and eight siblings, John Wesley, Walter, Martin, James, Ernest, Robert, Willie Pearl and Laura Mae.
Surviving are: his children, Lewis L. Banks, Jr. (Miranda), Maria Greene (Oscar) and Sheila Wakeley (Melvin); six grandchildren, four great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
The Homegoing Celebration for Mr. Banks will be Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at 1:00 pm at St. James CME Church with interment in Southview Cemetery in LaGrange. Rev. L. K. Allen will officiate. Visitation is Tuesday, April 15, 2014, 4 til 6:00 pm at the funeral home. The body will lie in state at the Church on Wednesday beginning at 11:00 a.m. until funeral time.
