Marian Hamburg, Ed.D. Obituary

Marian Hamburg was born in Webster Groves, MO, on October 20, 1918. She received her Bachelor's degree in 1940 from University of Missouri, Master's degree in 1945 from NYU, and her Doctorate in 1950 from Columbia University.
A pioneer in the fields of school and community health education, Dr. Hamburg established the Department of Health Education at NYU and became Department Chair. She started the first graduate program in human sexuality in the nation. Upon retirement, she was bestowed the title of Professor Emeritus. A highly esteemed teacher, consultant, author, researcher, editor, program director, and mentor, she was deeply involved with numerous national and international health promotion societies. In 2011 she received the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development Lifetime Achievement Award.
Marian paired her illustrious career with the belief that personal relationships were equally as important as professional success.
Marian was the beloved wife of the late Morris Hamburg of Baldwin, NY, and San Diego; wise older sister of the late David Miller of St. Louis; and cherished mother of Jean and Jackie Hamburg of Marblehead, MA, and Mountain View, CA. She will be fondly remembered by granddaughters, Julie and Laura; sister-in-law, Betty Miller; nieces, Sue Fitzwilliam and Alison Clay; nephews, Greg and Jeff Miller; and 14 grandnieces and nephews.
Dr. Hamburg inspired myriads of people around the world by modeling a life well-lived for nearly 94 years. In her own words, "Death is simply a part of life, and my life has been miraculous." Marian's impact on those she touched was also miraculous. She died of cancer on October 10, 2012, in San Diego.
Donations in her honor may be sent to Chalice Unitarian Universalist Church, 2324 Miller Ave., Escondido, CA 92029.
