Born June 17, 1915, in Maine, Audrey Marie Butterfield was the eldest of three surviving children of Amasa M. Butterfield and Ruevilla C. Parker. She was raised on the family farm in northern ME.
Audrey began teaching school in 1938 until her marriage to the love of her life, Leigh C. Briggs, in AZ on July 4, 1941, while on their way to starting a new life in CA. Their idyllic life was interrupted by Pearl Harbor. They returned to ME and raised three of their four children until 1957 when they came back to CA, settling briefly first in Chula Vista, where their youngest child was born in 1958, and then in San Diego. Audrey went back to school at San Diego State to get her teaching credential and graduated in 1961 at age 46. She was immediately hired to teach kindergarten at Midland School in Poway where the family finally settled and where she taught for the next 21 years.
Audrey was suddenly widowed in 1962. She married Harold S. Alderman Jr. in San Diego and was widowed again in 2009.
After retirement, Audrey became very active in Division 63 of the California Retired Teachers Association where she rose to four years as the State Chairman of Resource Services and was nominated for the prestigious Ruth Q. de Prida Award at the age of 82, when she retired again. Audrey was active in the American Association of University Women and the Mayflower Society. She traveled widely, was an avid reader, and enjoyed playing bridge and Shanghai. She spent her last yeas in the loving care of her eldest daughter, Katie, and her family in Escondido. Audrey's happiest moments were spent with her family.
She is survived by sons, Leigh G. (Susanne) Briggs and David C. Briggs; daughters, Katherine J. (John) Murphy and Kim E. (Bob) Blanchard; 12 grandchildren; 19 1/2 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; eight nieces and nephews; 16 great-nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law, Katherine Rinehart of Williamsburg, VA.
Memorial Services will be held Friday, January 25, 2013, at 11:00am at St. Bartholomew's, 16275 Pomerado Rd., Poway. Inurnment will be at the Susan S. Cashmore Memorial Columbarium at St. Bartholomew's immediately after services. A Reception to follow at Katie and John's.
This loving, caring, gracious, giving and forgiving, inspirational, generous, kind, modest, amusing, beautiful woman will be sorely missed by everyone whose life she touched.
