Alfred P. Atkinson Obituary
Atkinson, Alfred Paul 87, of Gurnee passed away peacefully the evening of December 29, 2012 at Manor Care in Libertyville. Born October 30, 1925 in Lake Forest, IL, he married Jean Weiss in 1950 in Waukegan. He retired from Johns-Manville as a mechanic and had been a part time commercial fisherman on Lake Michigan. A true member of the "Greatest Generation", he enlisted in the US Army Corps in July, 1943 and served his country with honor and distinction. Discharged November 1961, he had become a jet fighter pilot, US Air Force CPT. He loved to fly airplanes, loved fishing and was a beekeeper. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 60 years Jean, father of Gale (Dennis) Dulian of Wadsworth and Gary (Lisa) Atkinson of South Carolina; grandfather of five; great-grandfather of three; also survived by one brother, Bert (Donna) Atkinson of Waukegan. He was preceded in death by his step mother, Daree Atkinson June 5, 2012. Visitation will be Thursday, January 3, 2013 from 5-8pm at Salata Gurnee Funeral Home, 4190 Old Grand Ave., Gurnee. Graveside service will be held at 11am Friday, January 4, 2012 at Highland Memorial Park in Libertyville. Donations to Gurnee Community Church.
