Wallace Sr., John H. "Jack" (17 March, 1921 - 14 September, 2013) Age 92, died Saturday at the Rolling Hills Manor in Zion, lllinois. A memorial service will be held at 1:00p.m., Saturday, 21 September, at the First United Methodist Church in Waukegan, Illinois. Jack was born in Pitcairn, Pennsylvania on St. Patrick's Day, 17 March, 1921. After completing boot camp at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in North Chicago, Illinois, Jack served as a Gunner's Mate in WWII, stationed in the South Pacific. After the war, he graduated from Indiana State Teachers College (now Indiana University of Pennsylvania), in Indiana, Pennsylvania, where he met his wife, Alta Mary Middlehurst. The couple was married in 1950, and moved to Waukegan in 1954. He later accepted a commission as an officer in the Naval Reserves. Jack completed a Masters degree from Roosevelt University in Chicago, with further studies at the University of Illinois and Northern Illinois University. He began his teaching career in Pennsylvania, eventually teaching at the North Chicago Community High School from 1954-1984, retiring as chairman of the Business Education Department. Jack and Alta were active members of the First United Methodist Church, and volunteered for many years at the Waukegan Public Library. Jack is predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Alta, and survived by sister Dorothy (Donald Fails), of Pitcairn, Pennsylvania, daughters, Laurie (Ronald Steckel) of Campbell, California, Mary Lynn of Waukegan, Illinois, son John H., Jr. (Carol) of Salem, Massachusetts, grandchildren, Heather Steckel (Jason Victor), of San Jose, California, Bryan Steckel (Lindsay) of Chandler, Arizona, Katherine Wallace (Jarred Hill) of Front Royal, Virginia, and great-grandson, Jackson Victor. Internment will be private. Arrangements under the care of Salata-Gurnee Funeral Home, 4190 Old Grand Ave., Gurnee.
