Robert Eugene Abbott Robert Eugene Abbott passed away on Sunday, June 13, 2010 at his residence peacefully with family and close friends surrounding him and after a courageous two year battle with cancer. Robert was an inspiration to everyone who knew him and he will be deeply missed in this world. He was born on December 4, 1936 to Ernestine and Eugene Abbott in Kenney, Illinois. He is survived by siblings: Sisters Shirley Shepherd, Bloomington Il.; Linda (Mike) Flick, Lancaster OH, Brothers: William T. (Margaret) Bloomington Il; Jerry Redlands CA. In addition, nephews Kim (Linda) Shepherd, Tim (Jennifer) Shepherd, Jeffrey Abbott, Esq., Jamie (Robin)Abbott, CWO Darrin (Nikki) Flick, Nieces Lori (Kevin) Beck, Cindy (Jim) Curtis, Camera (Rich) Romano, Dana (Mike) House, many great nieces and nephews, Best Friend for 44 years William Vickers. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernestine and Eugene Abbott and brother-in-law, Kaywin Shepherd. Robert began his impressive career by graduating from Bloomington High School in 1954 continuing his educational path by graduating from Illinois State with a BS in 1958, MS in 1966. Continuing on at Indiana University, Marquette University, St. Louis University, Webster College, University of Illinois, National Lewis University, St. Xavier. University of California, University of Tennessee, Mundelein College, and Piaget Institute in Switzerland. His work experiences include Withers Public Library, Bloomington, Il., Spec. Ed Teacher Springfield Il, Ed. Assistant Bloomington Il, Teacher Multiply Handicapped, Waukegan Schools, Consultant for Special Ed. Waukegan Public Schools, Assistant Supt. Waukegan Public Schools and Adjunct Professor, National Louis University. Honors and Awards that he is most proud of are: Robert E. Abbott Middle School named for him by the Waukegan Board of Education in 1992. LDA Presidents Award LDA Pioneer Award, DLD Outstanding Contributor, Delegate to White House Conference on Handicapped, Mr. ICEC, ISBE Outstanding Administrator Award, ISBE Red Apple Award for Excellence, CEC Outstanding Contributor Award, ICEC Meritorious Service Award, ILDA Leadership Award, ILDA Outstanding Administrator's Award, BPWA Outstanding Citizen Award, Lake County Mental Health Award, Illinois State University Outstanding Alumnus Award, Fellow Melvin Jones Lions Award, Waukegan Public Schools Excellence in Administration Award, Red Carrison Humanitarian Award, Lion of the Year, and Outstanding Secretary of Little Fort Lions Club for 35 years. LDA, President, Historian, Treasurer; ISPD, President, Historian; IDLD, President, Newsletter Editor; NEA, IEA, Lakes NEA, Illinois Retired Teachers Assoc, Lake Co. Retired Teachers Assoc., Phi Delta Kappa, Waukegan Historical Society, Waukegan Jack Benny Committee- Secretary; Speaker, Author, Lecturer, Committee Member, Adjunct Faculty Member National Lewis University, Bradley, NIY, ISU; ISU Alumni Association, Friends of Warren Newport Library, AARP, Illinois Rt. 66 Assoc., Alpha Beta Alpha, Fellow Lions of Illinois Foundation Caring Cremation has taken place with a private family service in his home town of Kenney Illinois. A memorial celebration of Robert's Life will be held at the school named for him Robert E. Abbott Middle School on August 8, 2010 at 1:00p.m. All who knew Robert in any capacity are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, Robert wished all donations to be made to the Robert E. Abbott Middle School Foundation Scholarship Account- Waukegan Public Schools Foundation Lincoln Center- 1201 N. Sheridan Road or the Little Fort Lions Club of Waukegan- PO Box 595, Waukegan, IL 60079. His family wishes to thank Dr. Mehta, Oncologist and his entire staff, Staff at Rolling Hills Place and care giver Regina Taylor, dear friends Joyce Meyer and Stoney Jones who helped in so many ways, and the Star Hospice staff. There comes in a lifetime a special person that outshines others by his presence and good deeds. Sometimes they impact so many lives and leave a wonderful legacy in their wake, that words can not describe them. Robert Abbott was such a person. Our world was a better place with him in it and now has a void left by his passing. God Bless You Robert!
