William "Nick" Taylor

William F. "Nick" Taylor, 88, of Lake City, Florida, died Monday, February 24, 2014 at North Florida Regional Medical Center in Gainesville following an extended illness. He was born in South Bend, Indiana to the late Harold and Irene Taylor and has lived here in Columbia County for the past 2 years. After high school he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard and served during World War II. He spent 45 years as an Athletic Director and Guidance Counselor at Palmetto High School in Miami, Florida. Most of his life was dedicated to community service, the Airport and the Kendall Lakes Lions Club, the Stuart and Jensen Beach Kiwanis Clubs, as well as the Lake City Kiwanis Club. He had served as Past President for two of these clubs. He was also a Past District Lt. Governor and Kiwanis Trustee. He was Key Club Advisor to three High Schools for 15 years. He also worked for 30 years as the Orange Bowl Hospitality Chair, hosting the visiting press. This culminated with the Olympic Soccer Tournament held in Miami, Florida in 1996.
He was also a faithful member of Epiphany Catholic Church and of the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his wife Dr. Joyce Taylor of Lake City, FL.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening, February 27, 2014 in the chapel of Gateway-Forest Lawn Funeral Home with Father Mike Pendergraft officiating. Visitation with the family will be held two hours prior to service time 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
