Elliott Gates Hendry, age 94, passed away Monday, May 13, 2013, at the Lake City Veteran's Hospice. Mr. Hendry proudly served in the Army Air Corp of the United States of America during World War II. He served in Hq & Hq Sqdn 27th Bomb Gr. V Bomb Cmd and held the rank of Master Sargent. He was captured in the Phillippines and was a survivor of the Bataan Death March in 1942. Hendry was held as a POW in Japan for three and a half years. He was liberated when Japan surrendered in 1945. He departed Japan October 10, 1945. He received several awards and medals including the Purple Heart. He is a graduate of the University of Florida with a Masters of Education degree in Horticulture. He taught and made his living in Horticulture until his retirement.

Mr. Hendry was preceded in death by his two sons, Elliott Hendry, Jr (Skip) and Paul Hendry, and his grandson, John C. Hendry. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Billie Jean Hendry, his daughter, Ms. Penny Fay Peirce, three granddaughters, ten great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held for Mr. Hendry on Friday, May 24, at 11:00 a.m. at the Evangel Church of God located at 370 SW Monitor Glen Lake City, FL. Interment will be at a later date in Florida's National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL.
