away surrounded by family on August 4, 2010 following a brief illness. The youngest of five children of William Van and Lucy Dickert; Dean was raised on the family farm in North East Alabama. Dean Graduated from the University of Alabama in 1952 and then moved to Lake City in 1954 where she spent the next 27 years raising her family and teaching in the Columbia County School System. Dean spent 25 years teaching business courses at Columbia High.
In 1976, after earning her Doctorate at the University of Florida in Business Education, Dean
served as professor of Business and Management at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) in
Oxford, MS. She retired from Ole Miss as a Professor Emeritus in 2001. Returning to her home
in Lake City, Dean enjoyed playing bridge with her friends and remained active in volunteer service with the Lake City Medical Center and with the Haven Hospice thrift store. Vanessa Dean Arnold is survived by her sons; Gregory B. Arnold of Bradenton, FL., and Harold (Hal) Arnold of Marion, Al. Dean spent the past two years living with her son and daughter-in-law (Hal & Paula) at Judson College, Marion, Al. Her family requests that memorial gifts in her honor be made to Judson College, General Scholarship Fund, 302 Bibb Street, Marion, AL., 36756; or to a charity of their choosing. Home Health, Baya Point Rehabilitation Center and the Dees-Parrish Funeral Home for their kindness and professional service during her illness. A very special thank you is extended to the Willow Brook Assisted Living Home for going far beyond the call of duty in showing love and unwavering support for our mother and her family during these difficult times. A memorial
service will be held at a later date.
