Mr. Michael Brinson Flanagan, age 65, of Fort White, Florida died Wednesday, July 16, 2014, in the Shands University of Florida Hospital, Gainesville, Fla. Following a brief illness. He was born and raised in the Ellisville community of Columbia County and lived in Lake City most of his life. He was employed in the Columbia County School District for almost 40 years and began his musical career at Everybody's Assembly of God Church, Ellisville, Fla. 44 years ago. He was a graduate of Columbia High School Class of 1967 and class valedictorian. He was hired in 1971 as a teacher at Lake City Junior High School, moved to Columbia High School and taught there until 1989, then was named Dean of Students at Lake City Junior High. He then was Assistant Principal at Lake City Middle School and transferred to CHS in 1994. He became Superintendent of Schools in 1966 and served two terms thru 2004. He then taught math courses at LCCJ, did private tutoring and became a licensed court mediator. He was Boys Tennis coach from 1974-1986. He was a graduate of the University of Florida with a BS in Education, a MS in Educational Administration and an MS in Math. He was a member of the Rotary Club Fla. Association of District School Superintendents and the North East Florida Educational Consortium. He was a member of the Our Redeemer Lutheran Church of Lake City and enjoyed fishing, playing the organ and piano and cooking. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eddie Carl and Nellie Myrtice Hunter Flanagan and his brother, Rhett Flanagan. He is survived by his sister, Myrna (Obie) Brooks of Lake City, Fla.: Three nieces, Rhonda Kay (Leroy) Sherrod of Lake City, Fla., Michelle (Shawn) Barnett of Jacksonville, Fla. and Sherrill Flanagan of Brooker, Fla.: Three great-nieces, Raegan Brooks, Rylee Brooks and Ryann Brooks all of Atlanta, Ga.: One nephew, Rodney (Michelle) Books of Atlanta, Ga.: Three great-nephews, Tyler Sherrod of Lake City, Fla., Rhett Barnett and Bradley Barnett both of Jacksonville, Fla.; Funeral services will be conducted at 11 A.M. Saturday, July 19, in the First United Methodist Church, Lake City, Fla. with Pastor Bruce Alkire of the Our Redeemer Lutheran Church officiating. Guest speakers will be Mike Millikin, Terry Huddleston and Karla Hatcher. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, Lake City, Fla. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 P.M. Friday, July 18, at GUERRY FUNERAL HOME, 2659 S.W. Main Blvd. Lake City, Fla.
