Mrs. Ernestine Woods was born on October 31, 1914 to the late Robert and Sarah Palmer in Meridian, Georgia.
Her Christian journey began at an early age in Savannah, Georgia where she attended and was baptized at the First African Baptist Church and then later joined St. John Missionary Baptist Church.
She attended the School System in Savannah completing her high school education and then attending Georgia State College.
Mrs. Woods met John C. Woods "J.C." and united in Holy Matrimony in 1944 in Jacksonville, FL. To this union of 56 years, they were blessed with three children, Bernard, Michael and Judith.
She began studying and completed her area of expertise in Nursing at Brewster Hospital in Jacksonville, FL as a RN. An occupation that she enjoyed and mastered until her retirement from Sunnyland Hospital in Orlando, FL.
Mrs. Woods and her husband had lived in several places. She lived in Seattle, Washington while her husband J.C. served in the United States Navy. They returned to Jacksonville, FL and lived there until 1959. While living in Jacksonville, she was a member of Mt. Ararat Missionary Baptist Church.
In 1959, the Woods family moved to Kissimmee, FL. She continued her nursing at Orange Memorial Hospital in Orlando, FL.
She and her family became members of the St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church and she was a dedicated and faithful member until she and J.C. retired. While a member she was Director of the Youth Choir and served on the Missionary Ministry.
In 1984, Ernestine and J.C. moved back to his birthplace, Lake City, FL. She then joined Sister Welcome Missionary Baptist Church and continued her walk with God and her faithful service to the ministry.
She served as President of the Mission Ministry, Deaconess Ministry President, Church Pianist, Church Treasurer, President Emeritus of the Missionary Ministry, Assistant Director of Youth Choir, and Choir President.
Sis. Woods enjoyed attending and traveling to the Florida General Baptist Conventions and she was an active member of the First Central M. B. Congress of Christian Education. With the Congress she was a Recording and Assistant Recording Secretary under Rev. Billy Simon and a Coordinator for the Mission Department. Under the FL General Baptist Convention she was a Faith Pioneer for the Palatka Retreat.
Mrs. Woods was preceded in death by her husband, J.C. in 2000, and her son Bernard in 2001. Since their death she remained in Lake City until 2013, returning to Kissimmee to be cared for by her children. Although her body was in Kissimmee, her heart was always in Lake City and her Sister Welcome Church Family.
She leaves to cherish her memories her son Michael Woods (Queen), and daughter Judith Woods Anderson, Kissimmee, FL. Five grandchildren, Larry Anderson, Jr. (LaToya), Dionne Anderson, Kissimmee, FL, Monique Woods Victor (Jason), Washington, D.C., Jasmine Anderson, Kissimmee, FL and Michael Woods, II, Los Angeles, California. Three great-grandchildren, Deandre Gainey, Amyiah & Aliyah Anderson. One sister, Dorothy Wofford, Spartanburg, South Carolina, former son-in-law, Larry Anderson, Sr., and a host of sorrowing nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The wake for family and friends will be Friday, August 22, 2014 from 5-7 P.M. at the Sister Welcome (M.B.) Church 3194 S.W. Sister Welcome Rd.
The Funeral will be held Saturday, August 23, at 11:00 A.M. at the Sister Welcome Church with Moderator Major Franklin, officiating. Interment will follow in the Hope Henry Cemetery.
