Master Sergeant Herbert Edward Pepper, 93, died early Tuesday Morning October 2, 2012 at the V.A. Hospital in Lake City Florida after an extended illness. He was the son of the late Jesse Lee and Maggie Lula Veal Pepper. He had made his home in Lake City since 1946 coming here from Cleveland Georgia. He was of the Catholic Faith. He is preceded in death by two brothers Howard and Henry Pepper and six sisters Reba Pepper, Robbie Shaw, Rethea Jackson, Rilla Bishop, Ruth Hubbard, and Ruby Allen, one grandson Dustin Pepper. He served his country in the United States Army during WWII. He was also a survivor of the Bataan Death March from April 1942 till August of 1945. He was a POW and received many metals The Bronze Star, Phillipine Liberation, American Defense, Good Conduct, American Campaign, Asiatic Pacific Campaign. He enjoyed going to the mountains, fishing, riding his bike, gardening and flowers.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-five years Pauline Pepper, Lake City, FL, three sons Thomas Pepper (Renee) Panama City, FL, Herbert Pepper (Sherry) Lake City, FL, Michael Pepper (Kim) Live Oak, FL, two daughters Carol Giebeig, Lake City, FL, and Patricia Stapleton (Keith) Jacksonville, FL, one sister Roseman Ellison, Las Vegas, Nevada. Twelve grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild also survive.
A Funeral Mass will be conducted Thursday, October 4, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. in the Epiphany Catholic Church. Visitation with the family will be held Wednesday October 3, 2012 at the Dees-Parrish Family Funeral Home Chapel from 5 P.M. until 7 P.M. Interment service will follow in the Jacksonville National Cemetery on Friday October 5, 2012 at 9:30 A.M. with Military Honors. Arrangements are under the direction of the DEES-
