BALDWIN -- Gary William Dode, 79, of Baldwin, answered when he heard his Heavenly Father call him home on July 7, 2018.

"You are reading in the newspaper that I am dead. Do not believe a word of it, for I am more alive than ever before. I have been released from all my pain and suffering. This body that I have no more use for will be put in the ground, but I can assure you that I am not there. I am rejoicing and playing ball with my Savior."

Born Feb. 19, 1939, in Fenton, Gary William Dode was a gift sent from God for his parents, Harold and Mildred (Millie) Dode.

Gary fell in love with and married Sandy Zunich at Eastern Michigan University, in 1962. From this union they were blessed with two children, Mark and Marcie.

In his life, Gary was a high school principal, an eighth-grade math teacher and a computer teacher in Whitehall. He was an avid University of Michigan sports fan. He loved football, skiing, DeColores and Emmaus walks. He had a great love for Habitat for Humanity.

Gary leaves to cherish his memory loving wife of 56 years, Sandy; children, Mark Dode, of Shannon, Ga., and Marcie (Mark) Gleason, of Sault St. Marie; grandchildren, Mark Anthony Dode, Jared (Celeste) Gleason, Ryan Gleason, David (Abby) Gleason and Journey Gleason; brother, Harold "Bud" (Ilene) Dode, of Tempe, Ariz.; and sister-in-law, Nancy Dode, of Linden.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, James Dode.

In the spirit of which he lived life, Gary still is giving in death, by donating his brain and spinal cord to U of M Brain Research Program.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to be made to the Bread of Life Food Pantry of Baldwin, in Gary's name and/or the Fenton Scholarship Fund -- noted to Marc Peck Athletic Account, 3100 Owen Rd., Fenton, MI 48430.
