Leland Schachterle Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 24 to Oct. 28, 2012.

Leland Edward Schachterle, age 79, passed away peacefully at Tennova Residential Hospice on Oct. 5, 2012. Born on July 8, 1933, he was the only son of Edward and Mary Schachterle of Haxtun, Colo. Though she preceded him in death, he was the loving husband of Leora and beloved father of Maureen (Dave) Willis, Michael (Dawn) Schachterle, and Marga (Brian) Hinsley. He was also a joyful and doting Boco/Opa/Grandpa to nine grandchildren and two great grand-children (with a third on the way that he would have enjoyed spoiling!).
Both Leland and his wife, Leora, (He-Lee and She-Lee to their friends) were active in the Methodist church wherever they lived. Lee was often in the choir making a joyful noise and played the piano on occasion! Lee worked passionately as a life-long educator, professionally as a high school math teacher in Los Alamos. (Direct quote from him: "Education is what's left when you forget everything they taught you.")
After a much anticipated retirement, the Lees took to the road in an RV to see the sights of America, volunteering along the way as hosts at many parks and recreation sites, before settling in south Texas to enjoy their golden years. He found a second calling as a volunteer at the Rio Grande Regional Hospital Auxiliary in Alamo, Texas, serving as their president with the same passion that he had taught with for so many years, and many were affected by his leadership there.
Throughout his life, Lee enjoyed educating, volunteering, traveling, math puzzles, card games and generally laughing (often times mischievously) with friends and family. His family grieves his passing, but rejoices knowing he is free from this earthly shell, and smile as they imagine hearing the Father's words, "Well done, good and faithful servant,...enter into the joy of your Master!" (Matthew 25:23) We would also like to thank the people of Echo Ridge, and especially the management and staff of Arbor Terrace for their kind assistance. We are also grateful to the Tennova Residential Hospice; may God continue to bless your ministry.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Rio Grande Regional Hospital, Auxiliary/Volunteer Services, attention Lynn Barnet, 101 East Ridge Road, McAllen, Texas, 78503, or to dementia research at alzinfo.org/donate. There will be a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. on Nov. 3rd, 2012 at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel, 6200 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, Tenn., 37919, with a reception to follow. A short interment service for both Leland and his wife Leora will be held Nov. 19, 2012 at Olinger Crown Hill Mortuary and Cemetery, at 777 West 29th Ave, Wheat Ridge, Colo., 80033. Arrangements by Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel. Online condolences may be made at rosemortuary.com.

He taught me algebra. I was ready to give up, when his teaching made me understand. I'll always be grateful.

Lee was my math teacher at LAHS and was the person who got me interested in mathematics. It is amazing how one person can make a difference in your life. I have worked over 43 years in the computer field. And it all started with Lee!
