Ellen LaPlant

Ellen passed away peacefully on Nov. 7, 2012 in Rio Rancho. She is survived by her brother William E. LaPlante of Westminster, Md.; cousin John R. Wall of Olney, Md.; goddaughter Patti Cole of Santa Fe; and her goddaughter Linda Anderson of Los Alamos.
Ellen was born in Baltimore, Md. on March 14, 1923 and moved to Los Alamos in January of 1950. She was employed for thirty-five years with Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, later Los Alamos National Laboratory, as an administrative secretary, with twenty-two of those years being in J-Division where she was involved in many of the Nevada Test Site experiments.
Ellen was an active golfer in the Los Alamos Golf Association (LAGA) and the Los Alamos Women's Golf Association (LAWGA), and she enjoyed bowling in the 1950s and the 1960s. She was also involved in the Los Alamos Light Opera and Little Theatre (LALO) helping with props and sets. Ellen moved to Rio Rancho in April of 1992, where she volunteered with Presbyterian Medical Center and Presbyterian Rio Rancho Urgent Care.
Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Nov. 13, 2012 at FRENCH - Westside. There will be a private interment at Guaje Pines Cemetery in Los Alamos. If a tangible form of tribute is desired, in lieu of flowers and because of Ellen's love of animals, please make a donation to the Best Friends Animal Society; Wildlife Center, Espanola; ASPCA; or Rio Rancho Animal Control.
A very heartfelt thank you goes out to the wonderful people at Fairwinds - Rio Rancho, Hospice de la Luz, and Casa de Shalom for their loving care and support of Ellen. Many, many thanks to Ellen's amazing friends - words don't begin to express how much you meant to her. Thank you all. Ellen will be missed. She was loved by many.
