Charles D. Blackwell (Blackie), aged 92 and a resident of Los Alamos for 66 years, died on Nov. 20, 2012 in Albuquerque.

He was preceded in death by his parents Charlie and Rettie Blackwell; his wife of 66 years Marjorie; daughter Susan; brothers James, Eulas, and Earl; and sisters Alleta and Mary Sue.
Blackie was born Sept. 18, 1920 in Newport, Tenn. He attended Cocke County schools and volunteered for military service in the Army Air Corps on June 30, 1942. He trained as a glider pilot and later served as a flight engineer on B24 bombers. He was discharged on Dec. 6, 1945.
He was employed by the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (later LANL) on March 27, 1946 where he worked in the Health Physics Group until his retirement on Feb. 5, 1982.
He married Marjorie L. Thompson on April 13, 1946 in Albuquerque. She also worked for the Los Alamos National Laboratory for twenty-three years.
He is survived by son Charles D Blackwell, Jr. of Kemmerer, Wyo.; grandsons Nick Radney and wife Sandra of McFarland, Wis., David Blackwell and wife Jennifer of Shorewood, Minn., and Kevin Blackwell and wife Heather of Evanston, Wyo.; and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by brother Sherman Blackwell and wife Melvina and sister Edith Douglas all of Newport Tenn.
Graveside services and burial will be at Guaje Pines Cemetery in Los Alamos at 2:00 p.m. Nov. 28, 2012. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a memorial fund at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Los Alamos.
