Douglas Leland Neher (1947 - 2014)

Obituary
  • "To the one who always was there for comfort when I was..."
    - Kathleen Neher

Douglas Leland Neher, 67 a resident of Silver City entered eternal rest August 12, at his residence. Mr. Neher was born June 23, 1947 in Berkley CA, to Leland and Margaret (Farris) Neher. He was raised in Los Alamos, NM.
He played the trumpet in High school and NMSU school bands. Doug attended NMSU receiving his Mechanical Engineering degree in a work study program. He worked in various mines in NM, LA, MI, NV, MN, Indonesia, and Trinidad and Tobago.
He had a lifelong love of anything motorized. He bought, fixed, used and then sold too many motorcycles, cars, and trucks to count.
He was humble and solitary man but had many friends he cared deeply about. He purchased land here and between engineering jobs built a unique and beautiful home in the forest near Silver City. He was a kind of man who could pick up a manual and teach himself anything----yoga, massage, stained glass, computers, scuba diving and how to build an energy efficient home. Nothing intimated him.
He will be remembered for his gentle nature, his respect for all people, and the ability to be in the now. This was especially remarkable during the last two years that he dealt with cancer.
He was preceded in death by his father, Leland Neher. He is survived by his mother Margaret Neher, his life partner, Judy Menefee, five brothers John (Gail) Neher, Brian (Sandy Rupnow) Neher, Mike (Kathy) Neher, Paul (Nancy De Prost) Neher, Patrick (Pinshu Wang) Neher; a sister, Kathleen Neher; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family is grateful to the kind and caring people of Gila Regional Cancer Center, and especially Karen de Genevieve, the Reiki group that worked with him throughout his illness and Horizon Hospice.
A Memorial Service celebrating Doug's life will be held at Gomez Peak Pavilion on Little Walnut Road on August 30, 2014 at 2p.m. If you have a favorite story or memory of Doug, please share it along with condolences by visiting www.terrazasfuneralchapel.com.
