LANCASTER: Jack O. McClenaghan, 86 a prominent Lancaster businessman, passed away on Monday, June 7, 2010 at Carriage Court Assisted Living Facility. He was born on April 16, 1924 in Lancaster, Ohio to Mildred Mattox McClenaghan and Bryan McClenaghan.
He was a 1943 graduate of Lancaster High School and later in life received an honorary Associate Degree from Hocking College. He served in the South Pacific in the US Army for three years. He owned and operated along with his son a life insurance business in Lancaster for over 50 years receiving many awards.
His beloved wife, Joy McClenaghan, passed away in Florida on April 24, 2006. In addition to his parents, a daughter, Joy Ann Wilt, also preceded him in death.
He loved to spend time on his boat in Florida and was an avid fisherman. He was a born salesman who always had a smile and was quick to tease or joke. Education was his passion, and he created the JOMc Scholarship Fund at Hocking College in Nelsonville, Ohio, in 1988 and awarded hundreds of scholarships to deserving area students.
He was a past member of the First United Methodist Church, a member of South Gate Potter Lodge, Walnut Chapter No. 172, R.A.M., Aladdin Temple Shrine, AASR Valley of Columbus, and a life member of the American Legion Post #376 in Junction City.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Debbie McClenaghan; daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Steve Bitler, all of Lancaster; grandchildren, Jennifer Wilt of Groveport, Ohio, Susan (Ted Anderson) Wilt of Long Beach, California, Michael (Jennifer) McClenaghan of New Lexington, Ohio, Laura (Fiancé, Joel Wilson) Croston of Lancaster, Ohio, and Amy (Fiancé, Casey Root) Derenberger of Pickerington, Ohio; and six great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 12, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. in the FRANK E. SMITH FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL AND CREMATORY, 405 N. COLUMBUS ST., LANCASTER, OHIO 43130 with Rev. Cheryl Foulk officiating. Caring Cremation has taken place. Friends may visit one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Saturday. A private burial will be held at Maple Grove Cemetery, Lancaster, Ohio at a later date.
